ZipGenius

ZipGenius has all the functions of a typical compression utility plus a ton of extra features. It not only zips and unzips but also offers support for 21 compression and encoding and decoding formats, ZIP encryption and decryption, Pocket PC support via ActiveSync, drag-and-drop support, integration in the Windows shell, the ability to send archives via e-mail, and Web publishing of archives and files via FTP and TWAIN devices. The Standard Edition doesn't include FTPGenius (the FTP client). You can download it as an add-on, or you can get it in the Suite Edition package.

IZArc

IZArc modestly bills itself as the ultimate archiving utility--we're not so sure about that "ultimate" bit. Nevertheless, IZArc is definitely one of the best archiving utilities out there. Compatible with a huge number of archive formats, all the major are represented, as well as 7z (from 7-Zip), ISO, BH (Black Hole), and TAR, among others. It can create archives for many of the formats it can read, too, including 7z and TAR. It doesn't, however, create GZ archives.

IZArc supports archive encryption as well. AES 128-, 192-, and 256-bit encoding and PKZip 2.0 both are available. The app offers a reasonable range of context-menu options in Explorer, although not as many as some of its competitors. The user interface is more similar to WinZip's than some other alternative archivers, with big, obnoxiously colored icons making it clear to everybody and their dog just which buttons do what--not that that's a bad thing. Overall, IZArc is an excellent example of a third-party publisher supporting multiple formats and options under one roof--but it's not the only option out there.

FilZip

FilZip is an archiving utility that supports roughly 15 archive types, including ARJ, CAB, RAR, TAR, and LHA. Among its features are Windows integration (drag and drop, and file compression and extraction from the context menu), multiExtract, and FastExtract. It also comes with an SFX creator. With its zipping features, you can add files to an archive; delete, view, and open files from an archive; view ZIP comments; password-protect ZIP files; test files while extracting; and automatically install archives. You also can easily convert one archive into another, delete archives, and send archives over the Internet via the built-in e-mail function.

FilZip is both easy to use for novices, and flexible enough for experienced users. It may not cover every archiving format, but it should handle most needs.

ExtractNow

ExtractNow will let you extract multiple archives with the ease of a single click.

The program should appeal to users who handle a high volume of archives, because all it does is extract archive contents. The four buttons--Settings, History, Clear, and Extract--lay out the basics. Click Settings and a window pops up to entice you with options. From the boilerplate specials like Always on Top or Start with Windows to more detailed customizations such as delineating a default extraction directory, setting file extensions to ignore, and adjusting post-extraction behavior, ExtractNow gives users as much flexibility as possible when it comes to batch archive extractions. You can, for instance, set it to delete archives after their files have been extracted.

It is not an archiver, though, and won't be able to replace your favorite archiver. But if you're more about receiving than giving when it comes to ZIPs, RARs, and TARs, ExtractNow can save you a massive amount of time.

WinRAR

There are plenty of solid compression utilities to choose from, but this shareware powerhouse offers the features and ease of use that place it at the top of the compression category. WinRAR is easy to use, lightweight, and flexible.

WinRAR is a 32-bit Windows version of RAR Archiver, an archiver and archive manager. RAR files can usually compress content by 8 percent to 15 percent more than ZIP files can. WinRAR's main features include strong general and multimedia compression, the ability to process non-RAR archive formats, ZIP compression and decompression, support for long filenames, programmable self-extracting archives (SFX), repair of damaged archives, authenticity verification, embedded file comments, and encryption. Unicode is supported in archive filenames, allowing non-English filenames to be handled painlessly. You can manipulate the parameters of many archives at once and view a volume sequence as a single archive. WinRAR can convert other archive formats to RAR and search for specified text and files in archives.

Version 3.80 adds decompression support for AES-encrypted ZIP files, improved display information, more context-menu options, and a more secure method of deleting temporary files.

7-zip

It's easy for Windows users to forget that WinZip isn't the only file-compression utility in the world. Like its better-known competitors, the free 7-Zip unpacks a host of archive formats, including ZIP, TAR, GZ, and its own 7z format. Unlike WinZip, though, it can create TAR and GZ archives, which are commonly used on Unix and Linux systems.


The program's ability to shrink files was stunning. In our tests, 7z archives were up to 40 percent smaller than their ZIP equivalents, although compression did take longer, and the highest compression settings can hog system resources. Advanced options include the ability to create solid and self-extracting archives, and to adjust the compression level and password protection. The program also has a command line module. Though the main interface is overly simple and looks like it was designed for Windows 95, it's not hard to use and fairly self-explanatory. The context menu options, which include "testing" an archive, indicate that 7-Zip should be taken seriously.


7-Zip is fine for casual users with a bit of computer savvy, but it's especially well-suited for developers and anyone else who moves between the Windows and Linux/Unix worlds.
