Meebo

Meebo is a Web-based Firefox extension that aims to prevent window clutter by allowing access to six different IMs (Yahoo, Google Talk, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and Jabber) through one window. And despite some limitations, we found that it delivered on that promise.

The program's interface is skinnable and operates through its own Web page. All of your IM buddies are listed in a sidebar on the right side of the page. We created a Meebo account, which let us sign in to all of our IM clients at once, and merged all of our buddies into one list. We were able to send IMs to our friends as usual and without a hitch. Some of the emoticons got lost in translation and appeared as a word rather than an icon. We also found that you can't send messages to any of your buddies that appear offline. Finally, once you close your browser window or move away from the Meebo page, you'll lose your IM connection and you'll have to log in when you revisit the page.

The convenience of this free program outweighs any of the limitations we found. We recommend Meebo for all user levels.
